The Phantom Waistcoat

stitch-1

SUBMITTED BY:

Kayla Patterson

Outline the story …

My piece is inspired by Gaston Leroux's novel "The Phantom of the Opera". I drew inspiration from the Phantom himself, being in formal evening dress throughout the novel. The embroidery is a visual reference to the "keys of life and death" that appear later in the novel. The waistcoat itself is based on 1879-1880s mens' evening waistcoats, the original sketch of the Phantom costume in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Phantom of the Opera,' and the Phantom costume as it exists today. This project is a labor of love, as I've loved both the novel and stage production since I was 14.

Outline the construction…

Materials include black linen, fusible interfacing, buttons, snaps, buckle, and embroidery floss. Pattern is a self-modified version of the 1890s waistcoat, view B, by Black Snails Patterns. Mostly constructed by hand save for back and side seams. Modifications were made to the collar and front panels to achieve a look closer to the inspiration peices, while still maintaining a feminine form.

I can absolutely see the echoes of the Phantom in this, while also appreciating how good it looks with modern clothes. The shape is wonderful. Best of luck x

Waistcoats are wasted on men, in my opinion! I love this! Thank you!
