Outline the story …

I made Trainee greys from the Valdemar books By Mercedes Lackey. My costume is of trainee Skif from the book Take a Thief. He tries to steal a horse not realizing it is one of the companions (a being that looks like a horse) and is chosen as a Herald trainee. The greys are worn by Heralds in Training. As a trainee Skif helps the Heralds take down a kidnaping/smuggling ring. Specifically I used the books Arrows of the Queen and Take a Thief as they have the best descriptions of the clothing that I have found.

Outline the construction…

My entry is made of linen as this is the material specified in the books. I used French seams on the vest for durability and to prevent fraying, for the same reasons I used felled seams on the shirt and pants. Seams are machine sewn and then hand finished. For the shirt I used the Medieval Tailors Assistant to make a pattern. I used simplicity pattern 5929 for the vest as this is the pattern recommended by Mercedes Lackey and for the pants I used Burda pattern 6742, both of these patterns required some minor adjustments to fit me.

I like “buttonholes” on your vest. They look very cool!

It is very fun to see the Trainee Grays brought to life. It looks comfortable and practical, perfect for an active future Herald. I like the hand finish on the seams too.
