Dream of the Endless
Outline the story …
Once Upon a Time in 1916, the anthropomorphic personification of Dreams, Morpheus of the Endless was traveling through the war torn dreams of Man when he was suddenly entrapped by an evil occultist, Burgess.
Angry that he did not ensnare Death, he stripped Dream of his mantle and his vestiges, a bag of dreamsand, his helmet, and his dreamstone. Naked, Dream patiently waits in his prison plotting his revenge while the dreamrealm runs amok.
My entry is Neil Gaiman's The Sandman right before his entrapment in 1916.
Stories begin in dreams and end there, safe in Dream's Library,
All the stories we tell to others, all the ones we keep in our heart- silent, is told in dreams.
All of our make believes, all of our silent commentaries of the day's events,
all our wishes, all the could of's, would of's, and should of's - are stored in the Dreaming.
No story is ever truly dead, they live in dreams.
Life is the Story, We tell it by living it, Each of us starts with Once Upon a Time and when our story ends, we walk into the Dreaming.
For stories are never truly lost and they never die.
We are the Story and Stories live forever.
Outline the construction…
I was very excited to bring Sandman to life by focusing on a few key elements that are important to the character,
His cloak, the bag, the helm, and the gem I used a 1913-15 cloak pattern from Past Patterns that had the perfect collar I was looking for.
I planned to embroidered flames towards the bottom and settled on trying a reverse applique so it would look like the flames were coming from within. I choose a grey lavender fabric instead of red to represent the misty ethereal nature of dreams for the flames. I used a light weight wool poly blend that could be lined to hide the back of the embroidery. The lining was an opportunity to create an aspect of the heart of the Dreaming, Fiddler's Green. I wanted a warm, abstract, swirly garden and wanted to incorporate Gustave Klimt, Tree of Life and some of his abstract designs from that era. I used quilting blocks and piece the lining together, then hand sew the lining together except for the back because of the lovely drape of the cape.
The bag was from the same brocade as the flames, I smocked for the first time I was trying to mimic the wood beams from Shakespeare's Globe theatre.
The dreamstone was made out of resin and polymer clay, my first, and I turned it into a brooch for the cape and my helmet is made out of foam using two different patterns, a skull and a gasmask.
This is whole outfit is amazing! The cape is so wonderful. I love how dark and imposing it is on the outside but so colourful and magical on the inside <3
