Young Bella Took
Outline the story …
The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien has held a special place in my heart from a very young age. I found myself inspired by Belladonna Took, who might have been an adventurer herself within the limits of the Shire. Little is mentioned of her, but I imagined myself in a flowy green skirt and a vest in the midsummer heat of Hobbiton. This was before becoming a Baggins. Her nature was to be a Took, and in her heart laid adventure. This meant breathable clothes in the summer that moved easy, but could still be worn at festivals. As a beginner, I knew it would be a difficult task, but I wanted to capture Belladonna Took as a young hobbit with high spirits and a nature that would have likely driven away other suitors.
Outline the construction…
The vest and skirt compose of cotton fabrics, cotton thread for work by sewing machine, linen thread and beeswax for finishing work, cotton bias tape, metal buttons, and hooks and eyes. One of the biggest challenges was pattern drafting. The circle skirt was a basic pattern that required little thinking, but the vest was a different beast. I had to ensure that the vest would be moveable and button, yet still fit my figure. I had to figure out how to size the button holes and space them correctly. I was inspired by a pattern I found on Pinterest, but cannot find it anymore. I actually found Bernadette Banner’s sewing videos useful! As someone completely new to sewing, it was great to practice on the skirt for simple sewing before moving onto the complicated best.
You’ve done a brilliant job capturing hobbit vibes! The skirt looks comfy as heck, and the colour is gorgeous
I hope you have many great adventures of your own in this adorable outfit. How could you not? Best of luck x
Your outfit is so cool! Hobbits are so fit for adventures (even if they do not know that themselves))), you can make your own Young Bella adventure tale about travels, meeting creatures and animals! You`ve done a great job!
How appropriate to the your theme! I can definitely see you fitting into the Shire with not a problem at all! Nicely done.
Dress and background – marvellous fotoshoot.
I could imagine this in the LOTR movies, no problem. Very lovely!
I love this design, especially the brown/white pinstripe fabric paired with that sage green skirt. You look amazing!
Oh my, I can relate. Fitting a waistcoat as a beginner was a challenge for myself as well, and I was dealing with a simple boy’s torso. 🤪 Great job on the fitting.
So fun! As a big LOTR fan I would just wear this all the time.
A glorious job! I really like your button and buttonhole details!

I love how much you’ve thought of your character background, and how you brought it out in the design while keeping it recognizably within the realm of Hobbit fashion. I really love the contrasting layers of skirts!
What a lovely outfit – the green skirt looks so fun to wear (I doubt I’d be able to stop twirling in it)! You’ve done a great job on this 🙂
Such a sweet take on Belladonna Took. I love it! Very well put together! Thank you!
This is wonderful for a hobbit! I really like the secret second skirt underneath. It seems very fitting for Bella Took and very practical when going on adventures.
I love the hobbit look that you created! You definitely captured the look in style and cut. Seems like you’re about to go on a lovely adventure 🙂 (Also that skirt looks like a dream to twirl in!)
