My mum and dad for encouraging me and being my photographer

Outline the story …

Halfway through last year we lost my grandmother who basically taught me how to sew and enjoyed it when I read to her. One of the books that I read to her was a copy of "Poems of Sentiment" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, she especially liked the one titles ''A Solar Eclipse".

Even though I am a beginner I hand stitched this with her in mind and it felt as though she was watching over my shoulder like when I was little.

Outline the construction…

Originally I was only going to create the corset however I realized that I did not have anything to go with it. I used a 1800 Victorian base pattern that now I look back realized did not have all the information since it showed no boning channels. I based the layers together to stop them from shifting while I beaded on the constellations, attached all the pieces together so that the seams were inside the boning channels, fell stitched the channels into place and inserted my bones. bound all the edges and finished off the embellishments on the front , having to use a zipper as a front closure as I could not get a busk in time.

I made a quick panel skirt lined with pale yellow cotton fabric and felled around the bottom hem, a simple waistband with hook and eyes. The under bodice is the same fabric as the skirt cut to form a off the shoulder top with petal sleeves and more embellishments along the top.

As far as resources go I really only used google and watched some of my favorite youtubers: Cathy Hay, Morgan Donner and Bernadette Banner create things online.

The attention to the little decorative details are so lovely, and welldone for getting a zipper in while waiting for a busk! I can imagine the frustration and think it looks fabulous

Lovely and creative costume. The solar design and constellations are well worth enjoying in close view. Even a bit of “flossing”. Best wishes for your continued sewing adventures!
