Outline the story …

"The Rose of the Marrows" is what Sabetha Belacoros in Scott Lynch's "The Republic of Thieves" wants people to call her. How I imagine Sabetha, this is something she would wear. It is an elegant cut, but yet bold by the fabric choise. She wants to be seen and admired and through the book she chooses her clothes with care and a reason behind it. I see the world in the book as being loosely 1700s + fantasy and the cut of the jacket is somewhat inspired by a 1700s riding habit jacket I saw ages ago (focus on inspired, it's a fantasy world). In the book she is described as wearing riding habits many times. She seems very much a jacket person (no dresses, instead two piece outfits).
I think this jacket is something that the charismatic Sabetha would pull of very well. Probably with a darker hair colour, as she dyes her hair freqvently.
This is thus NOT a jacket that she is described wearing in the book, but rather something that I see very much would match her personality and inspired by the style I see her in. She is an actress at heart and could be seen wearing a lot of things, but when she is more or less herself she has a aura of wanting to be praised and seen for how awesome she is, and therefor something bold but elegant suits her.

Outline the construction…

Pattern: McCalls M7373, view A, but with buttons. Materials: two cotton fabrics found in my stash.
This was the first time I did major fit adjustments to a pattern. I shortened the waist, remade the armcye and completely remade the two-piece sleeve to make the sleeve be more fitted (and longer to fit my arms). I am used to tweaking and making patterns up, but not according to fit as I did this time. First time successfully using a mock up to improve the fit.
My first time doing a jacket with a lining and doing hand sewn button holes. Learned to use a thimble in hand sewing (in hemming and attaching the lining). First project done after getting a tailor's ham: upgrading my ironing skills.
First time doing pattern matching (especially proud of the back) and it was challenging as the squares were different sizes (some millimeters difference, not visible while looking at the fabric, but very annoingly off when trying to cut the fabric).
Challenges: The pattern called for hem stabiliziser, but I had none, so I used a stiff fabric, it gave the hem volume, but made it pucker in wierd ways. It looks ok after ironing. When doing the collar something went wierd with the seam allowance when I looked at both the instructions for view A (with zipper) and D (buttons). I fixed it by sewing the front of the collar to the front piece by hand.
