Renaissance Rapunzel
Outline the story …
Inspired by the German fairytale as recorded by the Brothers Grimm.
Once upon a time there was a lonely girl, named Rapunzel, who was whisked away by a wicked sorceress who locks her in a tall tower, where the only mode of entry is by climbing Rapunzel's magically long golden hair.
Rapunzel longs for adventure in the outside world when a Prince happens upon the secluded tower, after being lured by her beautiful singing. The Prince witnesses the sorceress calling for Rapunzel to "let down her hair, so she may climb the golden stair". The Prince seizes the opportunity to approach Rapunzel and offer her a chance for love and freedom.
But, when the wicked sorceress finds out, she cuts Rapunzel's hair and banishes her to the wild wilderness, while blinding the Prince and allowing him to wander the world endlessly, always looking for his lost love.
One day though, the Prince comes upon the beautiful sound of singing, having found his beautiful Rapunzel. They fall in each others arms and Rapunzel's tears of joy heal his eyesight and with no sorceress to break them apart again, they live happily ever after.
Outline the construction…
The pattern used was McCalls 2645 with little to no alterations as it basically fit me right from the get go The purple overskirt/Bodice is made from velveteen and edged with handsewn gold trim and pearl beads, and pearl trim around the waist. The ivory part of the bodice is made from leftover brocade and I used bits from my gold lace to create an original applique.
The underskirt and lining is pieced from scraps of poplin and draped with golden, flowery lace that is tacked on with swing tacks.
I used bridal button loops for the segmented sleeves and laced some matching ribbon through to hold them all together The under sleeve is a crinkled voile with a narrow serged hem.
The wig was bought from Ebay un-styled and I used Pinterest tutorials to create the braid My mom helped me pick out flowers and placed them on the wig with hot glue The "Juliet Cap" was made by sewing overlapped gold soutache on wash away interfacing, trimming it with bias tape and the pearl beads were handsewn.
Some challenges I had to overcome was making sure the pile of the velveteen was all facing the right direction (almost made many mistakes there), and hand sewing the beading was tedious, but very satisfying to finish.
