That's all me

Outline the story …

I don't know how I learned to sew or design. I have been dreaming of designs and patterns since I was a child: an idea is nourished in the womb of pia mater until the mellow of occasion grabs hold of me and by compulsion delivers it into reality. As each idea comes to fruition, more take their place; a creative Hydra, if you will... "Nevermore" is an idea I've been thinking about since the age of 12. One of my very first ever ideas. All of my ideas are inspired by specific characters, literary/media references, and moments in time -and I always knew I would create it around this time in my life as I carried it with me.

In a year marked by tragedy, personal heartache, and loss I had no other choice. It was time, and throughout the month of October, I created the piece that was sitting on the pallid bust of Pallas of my imagination. I documented its creation and put it up on YouTube. I take great delight in the coincidence it fits the theme of the Foundations Revealed Competition, as now formally learning the techniques I have only ever intuitively understood has begun to make me feel a little bit like less of a fraud. And I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have crossed my path.

Outline the construction…

The skirt is simply a very large circle (distorted around the hem to accommodate walking). It is slightly altered but inspired by Ballet Folklorico skirts. I constructed this out of 4 pieces of wool crepe. The bodice is a black stretch fabric from materials found at the thrift store. I used boning for the first time as I had never constructed a strapless bodice before. I also used guitar strings to create the structure around the top of the bust, as I had to improvise after having trouble with the structure of it.
