Outline the story …

When I was a little girl, I watched a charming movie Miss Muffet from Mother Goose's nursery rhymes, which was my favorite nursery rhyme, too. I remember falling in love with her historical outfit, and I wondered why my dresses weren’t as fancy. It sparked a love for period costume in me, and I have been making costumes ever since. In my childhood story, Miss Muffet is a little girl. I’d always wondered what became of her, and if I could see her grown into a woman, what would she be wearing? Did she ever recover from her fear of spiders? Is pink still her favourite color? Inspired by the original movie I’d watch, I have designed an ensemble that could take Miss Muffet from a day time promenade in the courtyard, to a fancy ball at night. With a reversible skirt, she can change up her look in a matter of minutes! Just like that, she is adorned with bows and pearls, and all cinched up with an elegant sash. Will she snag the gentleman caller she’s been dreaming of at tonight’s ball? Along with her pet spider Harry, and a pink gown that fits just right, Miss Muffet is ready for the adventure that awaits this eve!

Outline the construction…

I am a huge fan of draping, and I couldn’t wait to create a feminine and silky design. I had created a corset, crinoline and petticoat in my costume cutting course two years ago. When I heard about this opportunity, I couldn’t wait to put them back on the mannequin to design the perfect fairytale dress. One of the things I love about period design is how ladies would reuse their fancy fabrics. I used a technique that allowed me to keep the full yardage of fabric in tact. After cartridge pleating at the waist, I used ribbons to do internal pickups. I didn’t need to cut and hem, and I found something even more amazing! This skirt is REVERSIBLE! Talk about maximizing a garment! I made a boned bodice using a mix of cotton, chiffon and crepe. I was able to use up a lot of fabric scraps, odds and ends of trim and beads to create a feminine look. To keep the drape of the chiffon flounces, I used fray check to ensure a crisp edge. I had such a great time getting in the zone with this project, and I am looking forward to when I can do a real photoshoot! Thank you so much for holding this competition , and giving us such a good reason to pour out some Passion!

I love the consideration that went into creating this lovely dress for Miss Muffet, that is a lovely shade of pink, and it was such a clever idea to make a reversible skirt! I love the bows! And you even made her a pet spider, that is so cute!

    What a beautiful gown. Everything
In the flow of the fabric speaks to femininity, softness and a true designers thought process in the finished product. Good job.

So many things to love about this costume! The luxurious fabric, the versatility of the skirt (which in that period would have been brilliant as many women didn’t have many outfits), how it perfectly portrays feminine strength clad in refined beauty and mostly how perfect it is for little Miss Muffet 💖
