Outline the story …

"Green Man in the Garden" by Charles Causley.

"Green Man in the Garden" is a poem about how faces can be seen in trees, this particular tree is outside of the writer's home. The writer believes the tree is calling to them, wanting them to join them and becoming one with nature, I see this as just joining mother nature. But the writer sees this as something to be feared. It describes the Green man as having bones made of branches, teeth and thorns and he dressed all in green.

My depiction of the green man embraced mother nature and is showing the tree in autumn when he has begun to shed his leaves and all that will be left are the elder branches.

Outline the construction…

The dress pattern was made by draping fabric on to my body form as I am not yet confident in reading and amending commercial patterns. I used a brown stretch lycra with metallic swirl detail for the base layer which has been lightly boned. A side zip was fitted, however due to the stretch of the garment this was not needed.

I embroidered and appliqued the base dress with ribbons, trims and fabric patches to create the texture of the elder bark. This has then been embellished with leaves and rhinestones. The sleeves are made of a nude lycra with branches wrapping around the length of the arm. The hem of the skirt has been covered in fallen leaves cut in lame, chenille, brocade and cotton. The hem has been strengthened with a horsehair braid.

The dress is worn with a heavy pipe running through the hem to hold its shape. I made this pipe hoop removable for ease of transporting and so the garment can be worn to sit in.
