Outline the story …

"Wild Magic" by Tamora Pierce. The orphan Diane applies for a job that takes her and her trusty pony Cloud from her birthcountry of Galla to the kingdom of Tortall. Here she finds a new life and a new family, and learns that she has the magical ability known as 'Wild Magic', which enables her to speak to animals, heal them, and take their shape as well as bend them to her will. She makes friends with many at the Court of Tortall including black-robe mage Numair Salmalin, King Jonathan, and Queen Thayet of Tortall.

Diane spends time travelling the land and representing the crown. This gown is based on details about Diane's travels the Court of the Emperor Mage in Book 3 where she saves Carthak from the Gods' destruction. Descriptions of the clothing are limited but the renaissance of magic and learning occuring in Tortall draws links to Renaissance Italy for me.

Outline the construction…

I have had a limited budget and time because although we have been in Covid lockdown I am still working for a school and found out about this competition late in the piece.

However in 3 months I have managed to research how clothing was made in Renaissance Italy, such as pleating; resized the pattern of a bodice and sleeves for myself and put it together so that it fits comfortably. I have learnt how to happily learnt how to hand sew seams, properly finish with french seams and bone a bodice as I need the extra support!

Although I did not get to finish the sleeves I am pleased to have challenged myself and learnt new skills in working with hand sewing and patterns. I also had to use cotton as I was not willing to buy silk without seeing it in person but I am happy with the fabric

I really like how you chose to sew on the rings for the lacing, and your pleating looks great! Very nicely done.
